Positive School Culture
At Kegonsa we believe a positive school culture matters. It matters a lot. We work hard as staff, students and community to foster a learning environment that is inviting and welcoming for all. Read a little more about what we are working on here!
We finally have a School Song at Kegonsa. Our students are learning to sing it in English and American Sign Language.
DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time has continued from last year. In September, the entire school settled under the trees to read. In January, students switched classrooms with Kindergarten reading in 5th and 5th in Kindergarten. We have DEAR times every month.
The Traveling Gilly is a new award that is given weekly to a class that has demonstrated exceptional engagement. Students look forward to being the class of the week and even our older students enjoying taking Gilly with them for the week!
The Friendship Buddy Bench is also a new award that classes give other classes on a weekly basis. Each week the bench is presented by kids for kids for fostering friendship in and outside of the classroom. The Buddy Bench was gifted to us from our partner church “Good Shepherd by the Lake” in the 2016-2017 school year, but students loved it so much they want it to stay inside our school to celebrate friendship.
Lunch with the Principal is a weekly award given by classroom teachers who recognize students for being leaders in their classroom. Students each lunch with the Principal in the multipurpose room and have fun playing games together.
In the 2017-2018 school year we began Community (mixed grade) Morning Meetings to build community across our school. These meetings were wildly successful and will become a part of what we do here.
Birthday Celebrations are a big deal for a lot of students (and adults too!) We celebrate our students in many different ways. One of our favorites is a wall where students write nice things about a student and when they turn around they get to see all the wonderful things their peers and teachers think about them.
Reaching out to our community is also really important to us. Here is a pile of letters that students sent our friends at Kicks Unlimited who came in to teach us about respect and karate.
Staff too are celebrated at Kegonsa. One way that we honor our staff is through electronic shout outs. Another way is by recognizing them as our Star Includer of the week. Kegonsa's "Star Includer" is a staff member recognized for demonstrating outstanding work in including our students with disabilities, students with advanced learning needs, our students of color, and our students of diverse ethnic, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. This staff member has gone above and beyond simply welcoming our diverse students into our classrooms at Kegonsa. Rather, he/she has made an intentional effort to collaborate with Learning Strategists, EA's, parents, and staff to provide both academic and social-emotional support to those students in their classroom or grade level who might need it. He/she has asked how we can best serve these students and has demonstrated a willingness to try new strategies when others may not have worked.
Our star includer is one who truly embodies Kegonsa's asset-based mission to serve, to teach, and to love all students - not despite of, but in honor of their wonderful, and unique differences.
