Chromebooks

Students will return their Chromebooks, cases, and charging cords when they graduate or when they are scheduled to receive a replacement device.  All students will receive a replacement Chromebook in the fall of their 9th grade year.  If the Chromebook issued to the student is not returned, law enforcement will be notified and the Chromebook will be considered stolen property.

Each student is responsible for the overall care of their district-issued Chromebook, case, and charging cord.  Chromebooks that are damaged, or fail to work properly, must be taken to the library media center as soon as possible to be evaluated for repairs.  Do not attempt to fix the district-issued Chromebook on your own or take to an outside vendor for any type of repairs or maintenance.

General Care and Safety

• Do not use food or drink near your Chromebook

• Be careful when inserting and removing cords, cables, and accessories

• Always keep the protective case on your Chromebook, even when charging.

• Chromebooks and cases must remain free of any writing, drawing, or stickers other than those applied by the District

Identifying your Chromebook

• There is a district tag on the bottom of your Chromebook with the associated SASD barcode.  Chromebooks are traceable by serial number.  This tag MUST remain on the device, unaltered.  If the barcode falls off, please contact the library media center as soon as possible.

• If your Chromebook is missing a SASD barcode, please contact the library media center.

Storing your Chromebook

• Store your Chromebook in a locked locker when it is not with you at school.  Avoid stacking items on top of the device to protect from compression cracks.

• Chromebooks should never be left in a car, an area exposed to excessive heating or cooling, or unsupervised.

Transporting your Chromebook

• Unplug charging cord while transporting your Chromebook

• Carry your Chromebook with the screen closed

• Disconnect earbuds, charge cords, or other peripherals before transporting

Charging your Chromebook

• Students are responsible for bringing Chromebooks to school each day completely charged

• Chargers should remain at home

• Connect the charge cord with care.  Avoid using excessive force while connecting

• Establish a routine at home to help students remember to charge their device every night

Cleaning your Chromebook

• Never use any product containing any alcohol, ammonia, or other strong solvent to clean your Chromebook

• Disconnect the Chromebook from power and ensure it is off

• We recommend creating a gentle cleaning solution comprised of 50% water and 50% white vinegar, and apply the solution using a cotton cloth

• Never apply the solution directly to the Chromebook

Backgrounds

• Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver or background

• Presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug, gang related symbols or pictures may result in disciplinary actions

The purpose of your Chromebook is to support your learning experiences.  It is important to bring your Chromebook fully charged to school each day.  Students are responsible to bring their Chromebook to all classes, unless instructed not to do so by a teacher or administrator.

There will be a limited number of loaner Chromebooks available in the library media center for students to use during the day while they do not have access to their Chromebook.  The loaner Chromebooks must be returned to the library media center at the end of each day.  Students are responsible for any damage that may occur while the loaner Chromebook is checked out to the student including full replacement costs if the device is lost.

Students are only able to login using the stoughton.k12.wi.us Google account.  You will not be able to login using your personal Google account.  Passwords should remain private at all times.  Never share account information with anyone.  Use of another student's account is prohibited under the district’s acceptable use policy.  If students forget their password, they need to see their Library Media Specialist to have it reset.

Students are not able to print from their Chromebooks.  Students are highly encouraged to send or share documents electronically with their teachers and peers.

Students should keep their sound muted at all times unless a teacher gives permission for it to be on for instructional purposes.  In the event a teacher gives students permission to use sound, earbuds are required to avoid distraction in the classroom.

The majority of student work can be done using Google Workspace (Docs, Slides, Spreadsheets, Drawings, and Forms).  These online applications save work automatically for students.  Online applications are accessible on any device that has internet connectivity.

The District offers a limited number of hotspots that are available for checkout in the library media center.  The hotspots will provide access to the internet where there is a Verizon wireless signal.  For more information regarding the checkout procedure for a hotspot, please see the Library Media Specialist at your school.

All district-issued devices shall be used in conjunction with board policy 7540.03 - Student Technology Acceptable use and Safety.  It can also be found on the district website by navigating to “Our District” -> “School Board Policies”.  It is important that students and families review this policy.

General Guidelines

• Students will have access to all available forms of electronic media and communication that supports the district learning targets.

• Students are responsible for the ethical and educational use of their district-issued Chromebook. 

• Transmission of any material that is in violation of any federal or state law is prohibited.  This includes, but is not limited to the following: confidential information, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, and viruses.

• Any attempt to alter data, the configuration of a Chromebook, or the files of another user, without the consent of the individual, building administrator, or technology administrator, may be considered an act of vandalism and subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the student handbook and other applicable school policies.

Responsible Use, Safety, and Privacy

• Students are responsible for the contents of their account and device assigned.

• Make positive choices when using the device.

• SASD email should be used for educational purposes only.

• If you access a website by mistake that contains obscene, adult content and/or offensive material, close the site immediately and report the incident to a staff member.

• All data stored on district devices or district applications (i.e. Google Drive, Gmail, Schoology, etc.) is not private and can be accessed by district staff as deemed necessary.

• Revealing your full name, phone number, home address, social security number, credit card numbers, passwords could result in identity theft.

• The district cooperates fully with local, state or federal officials in any investigation concerning or relating to violations of computer crime law.

Electronic Communication

• Use appropriate language in your communication.

• All communication using district applications should be educational and is subject to inspection at any time.

• Only send communication to large groups of students or staff with permission from a teacher or building administrator.

At Home Use

• Use at home is encouraged.  The district does not provide support for home connectivity issues.  Hotspots available for checkout are supported by the district.

• Chromebook care at home is as important as in school; follow the same guidelines as the Care of the Chromebook section.

• When transporting the device, do not stack items on top of it.  Transport the Chromebook in the district-provided case.

• At home filtering will be provided by the district.  The Chromebook is meant for educational purposes at home as well.

What should I do if the Chromebook is broken?

• Chromebooks that are damaged, or fail to work properly, must be taken to the library media center as soon as possible to be evaluated for repairs.  There are a limited number of loaner Chromebooks available at each school.  When available, a loaner Chromebook will be temporarily assigned to you while your Chromebook is being repaired.

• If the Chromebook is damaged at home, it should be taken to the library media center the next school day.

• Students that damage a device intentionally or have repeated damage may not be given a loaner at the discretion of the building administrator.

Device Warranty

• All Chromebooks are covered under a district warranty.  In the event a Chromebook needs to be repaired, all costs will be covered under the district-issued warranty.

• This warranty does not cover lost Chromebooks, cases, or charging cords.  If the Chromebook is lost, students will be responsible for the replacement cost.  The total replacement cost of a Chromebook is $200.  If the charger is lost or stolen, students will be responsible for the replacement cost.  The total replacement cost of a charger is $35..  If the case is lost or stolen, students will be responsible for the replacement cost.  The replacement cost of a case is $23.

• If the Chromebook is stolen, a police report must be filed immediately.  The District will issue a replacement Chromebook to the student upon verification of a police report.  If the Chromebook is stolen, and a police report is not filed, students will be responsible for the replacement cost.

• Habitual damage to the Chromebook may lead to loss in privileges.
