7th Grade Orchestra

In 7th Grade Orchestra, students expand their playing technique by studying intermediate level bowings, fingerings, and rhythms. Students are introduced to the concept of shifting. Additionally, students continue to develop ensemble skills while playing 5 part music.

Needed Materials

  • Instrument of proper size and in good playing condition
  • Sound Innovations: Sound Development for Intermediate String Orchestra (Green Cover)
  • Rosin
  • Violin/Violas: Shoulder Rest (sponges are no longer useful due to advanced techniques taught)
  • Cellos/Basses: Rock Stop
  • Soft Cleaning Cloth
  • 1 inch Black or White 3-ring Binder with clear plastic cover
  • Pencil
  • Music Stand for home practice
  • Dampit (optional, but helps protect instrument in harsh winter weather)

Learning Targets

  • Perform music of various styles within an ensemble while focusing on balance, unity, and togetherness.
  • Read and notate music using quarter, eighth, half, whole, sixteenth, triplet, and dotted rhythms in both major and minor keys.
  • Develop understanding of shifting, vibrato, and advanced bowings.
  • Understand the factors of bow placement, weight, and speed in tone production.
  • Analyze different forms and patterns used in music.
  • Provide constructive feedback on music performances.
  • Compare commonalities that exist in other arts, history, and culture.
