7th Grade Band

In 7th Grade Band, students expand their playing technique by studying advanced beginner and early intermediate level concepts. Seventh graders continue to develop basic skills on their instruments including tone production, fingerings or percussion rudiments, note and rhythm reading, articulation, basic intonation, and dynamics.

Needed Materials

  • An instrument in good playing condition. Many band students continue to rent an instrument. Larger instruments such as tenor saxophones, baritones and tubas may be rented from school . Look on the back of this page for more information on rentals and on obtaining an instrument.
  • Method Book: Power of the Winds, Book 2. Also bring Book 1 from last year.
  • Instrument accessories: Flutes need a cleaning swab and polishing cloth. Clarinets and saxophones need a cleaning swab and a box of ten reeds at 2.5 or medium soft strength. Rico Royal, Lavoz and Vandoren are recommended brands.Trumpets, baritones, and tubas need valve oil and slide cream. Trombones need trombone slide cream and a small water spray bottle. Percussionists need snare drum sticks and a set of bell mallets.
  • A music stand for home practice.

 

Learning Targets

  • Perform music on a band instrument alone and in ensemble settings. Develop a sense of good tone production and articulations individually and a good sense of balance and blend in performing with an ensemble
  • Demonstrate understanding of musical notation, symbols and terms.
  • Use appropriate terminology in describing and evaluating music performances.
  • Relate music to other arts, history, and culture.

 

*Financial assistance is available for students who need help obtaining an instrument or supplies. The Stoughton Area School District strongly believes all students should have access to music programs, and therefore funds have been set aside for such purposes.
