About Mrs. Benson
Hello! My name is Lissa Benson.
From 2007-2009 I was the K-4 Classroom Music teacher at Yahara Elementary School and from 2009-2011 I was the 5th Grade Orchestra teacher and the 6th-8th Grade Chorus teacher at River Bluff Middle School in Stoughton, WI. Since the fall of 2011, I have been teaching K-5 Classroom Music at Kegonsa Elementary School. I am committed to sharing quality musical experiences with students of all ages through the National Standards for Music Education and Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Music (pdf). I enjoy and encourage students of all ages and musical ability levels. I promise to provide all students with a pleasant and respectful learning environment, tailored specifically to meet his or her individual music learning needs.
I graduated cum laude from the University of MN Duluth (UMD) with majors in Vocal & Instrumental Music Education K-12 in 2007, and received my Master of Arts in Education from Viterbo University in 2011. In 2011, I spoke at the state music convention in Madison, WI on engaging students in the music classroom. I am currently an active member of the following professional music educators organizations: American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, Music Teachers National Association, and Pi Lambda Theta, an educational honor society. Through the years, I have had the opportunity to be a counselor, a teaching assistant, and a private instructor at UMD's North Shore Summer Music Experience music camp for middle school and high school students. During the 2005-2006 school year, I was a private choir and voice instructor at St. James School in Duluth, MN. From 2006-2007 I was a private voice instructor at UMD's Music Academy. During my college career I was also honored to receive a scholarship from Phi Delta Kappa for my writings on technology use in the music classroom. I was the 2006 recipient of the American Choral Directors Association F. Melius Christianson Grant to attend the regional convention for vocal music educators. I continue to seek learning opportunities like these to better serve my students here in the Madison area where I have attended the state National Association for Music Education Conference annually. I also regularly take graduate music teacher education classes at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee, WI.
