4th Grade Music
In the fall of 4th Grade, students begin playing recorders. We always ask that students purchase a specific brand and model recorder so that they can produce a high quality sound and so that the instrument’s quality will not affect the quality of the child’s playing. Because our needs are so specific, Kegonsa purchases recorders for the group, and students reimburse the school for the cost (usually around $6.00). When the recorder unit is over, 4th Grade students get to keep the recorder which they will play again as 5th Graders. Watch the music web site and your child’s backpack for purchasing slips this September. Go to the Rockin’ Recorders website for some recorder playing fun.
This year, our school will celebrate Veterans Day in an all-school assembly on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 8:20 a.m. Our students will sing the Peace Round and the National Anthem and will observe two minutes of silence. Red, white, and blue clothing is encouraged on that day. Family members who have served or are serving our country are encouraged to attend (in uniform if possible) so we can honor your service! Norse Afternoon of Fun
On Sunday, February 11, 2018 the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers will be hosting the Norse Afternoon of Fun from 1:15-3:30 pm. At this community-wide event, the 2018 Syttende Mai King, Queen, Prince and Princess are announced and the Dancers perform. All SASD fourth graders have been invited to perform the Norwegian National Anthem, Ja vi elsker as part of their performance on that day. I hope you will consider having your fourth grader participate in this optional special event. As the event gets closer, please watch for permission slips to come home. Extra permission slips and lyrics sheets will be available on the Music Files page.
Madison Youth Choirs (MYC) Annual Boychoir Festival
Every year Kegonsa’s male students in grades 2-5 have the opportunity to participate in a special event called the Annual Boychoir Festival in Madison, WI on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. This is an official school field trip, but since it is on a weekend day, participation is optional. It is a great music opportunity for boys to come together and sing with tons of other boys from Dane County and beyond. Boys in grades 2-12 work in smaller age-group choirs and as a large group choir to learn songs during the day and then they perform a public concert the same night. They are still finalizing the details for this year’s Boychoir, so please watch the music web site for more information. Opera for the Young - Rusalka, A Mermaid's Tale
Every year, through the generous support of Working For Kids, Kegonsa students and Opera for the Young perform a famous opera. Although all students K-5 learn music and stories from the opera, 4th and 5th grade students have a special opportunity to audition to become a cast member who will sing and dance on stage with the professional opera cast. On April 6th our entire school will take a field trip to the Community Building Gym by River Bluff Middle School to see professional opera singers and our very own Kegonsa 4th and 5th Graders perform Rusalka, A Mermaid's Tale at 9:00 a.m. The show is open to the public and free of charge. Students will be encouraged to wear school-appropriate costume items that fit the theme of the production. For those students that audition and make it in to the opera cast, there are special rehearsal and time requirements; including required attendance at additional practices at school and an additional performance at the Stoughton Opera House on April 8th at 1:30 p.m. Students in the show are expected to arrive for a practice at 12:00 noon that day. Auditions will be held in the last week of February. If your student is interested, please watch for more details this spring! Click here to learn more about Opera for the Young.
This year's 3rd and 4th Grade concert on May 18th at 8:30 a.m. in the Kegonsa Gym will feature the 3rd graders singing music from Norway and 4th Graders singing songs from the United States in celebration of Stoughton's historical Norwegian-American heritage. 3rd Grade students will perform the same music at their evening Syttende Mai Opening Ceremony performance. You can visit the Music Files page to get practice materials for both events.
