Kegonsa Elementary recognizes the importance of wellness in our school, as well as the positive relationship between a healthy environment and the learning and behaviors that take place throughout the school day. We make wellness a priority and work to provide our students with opportunities to make healthy choices and be more physically active during and outside of school. Our objective is to expose our students to wellness opportunities that will encourage them to lead healthy lifestyles now and throughout their lifetime. Please continue reading to learn more about what Kegonsa is doing to create a healthy learning environment for our students, as well as champion the Stoughton Area School District’s Wellness Policy.
Kegonsa Gilly Gran Prix
The Gilly Gran Prix is an annual run-a-thon that raises funds for our school and encourages healthy habits. Following a 20 minute run/walk, students are rewarded with a medal, healthy snack, and water. Not only do our students get to participate in the excitement of the run-a-thon but we also welcome many parent and community volunteers. Our parent volunteer group, Working For Kids, does a tremendous job organizing the event every year.
Mindfulness in the Classroom
At Kegonsa we incorporate mindfulness into our guidance lessons. It is our hope that teaching students to stay and focus on the present moment they will be better apt to handle the various ups and downs of their day. The MindUp curriculum, which focuses on learning various parts of the brain along with calming strategies, is taught in all classrooms grades 1-5. There are also additional mindfulness lessons using MindYeti and Headspace websites to further our work of brain education and relaxation techniques. Each quarter one class from each grade will get additional lessons. Kegonsa is at the forefront of mindfulness in schools and it is our hope that our students will gain appropriate skills and techniques that are useful not only as children but also as they grow.
