Mindfulness

This year at Kegonsa our mission is to incorporate Mindfulness into our classrooms. We’ve done this with great success this year using the MindUp curriculum. MindUp, focuses on learning about three main parts of the brain, the amygdala (our emotion center), hippocampus (memory center) and prefrontal cortex (functioning center). Students are taught about the importance of these three structures and how they impact their development. MindUp is a research-based curriculum features 15 lessons that use the latest information about the brain to dramatically improve behavior and learning for all students. Each lesson offers easy strategies for helping students focus their attention, improve their self-regulation skills, build resilience to stress, and develop a positive mind-set in both school and life. Some of the tools used are deep breathing along w/ mindful moving, smelling, tasting, seeing and hearing. Mindfulness focuses on being in the present moment and how we can use our bodies as our greatest tool to de-escalate from difficult situations.

One of the tools used in collaboration w/ MindUp is Headspace. Headspace is a website and app that offers mindfulness activities for people of all ages, and provides a thorough progression through the practice of mindfulness. The utilization of Headspace has been amazing to see and has helped move our Mindfulness work forward.
