The Stoughton Area School District's elementary mathematics curriculum is Math Expressions. Within this curriculum, a series of learning progressions reflect recent research regarding students' natural learning stages when mastering concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and problem solving. These learning stages help determine the order of concepts, the sequence of units, and the positioning of topics.

In 5th Grade, units focus on the following:
1. Addition and Subtraction with Fractions
2. Addition and Subtraction with Decimals
3. Multiplication and Division with Fractions
4. Multiplication with Whole Numbers and Decimals
5. Division with Whole Numbers and Decimals
6. Operations and Problem Solving
7. Algebra, Patterns, and Coordinate Graphs
8. Measurement and Data

Math Expressions fits the learning professions, the core-grade level goals, and the dual focus on understanding and fluency of the Common Core State Content Standards.
