Learn how a professional chef can find inspiration in nature for a high-protein sourdough bread and visit the United Kingdom.

All without leaving the classroom.

Students in Soughton High School's Culinary Arts 2 class were the first to use our district's new Google Expeditions kit this school year.

Google Expeditions enables students to undertake virtual field trips and lessons "from Machu Picchu to Antarctica to the International Space Station," according to the program website.

Stoughton High School students helped Google pilot the Expeditions program in April 2016 after the school was selected to be a Pioneer Program School. This year, the Library Media Specialists together purchased a Google Expeditions kit that includes 30 goggles, a computer tablet and router.

Last week, students in the SHS Culinary 2 class used Google Expeditions for a lesson called "Food Ambition: Concept Chef." That lesson showed students how to look to nature for inspiration for food, such as looking to tree leaves for ideas about how to make the color of the crust of bread.

"Roll up your sleeves and discover what it takes to be one of the UK's most innovative chefs," according to the course description. "Trained by legendary chef Gordon Ramsey, young Vanessa Wade has become a very influential concept chef, inventing new cakes, breads and pastries for some of the UK's biggest names. Follow her amazing 12 month process as she thinks big, takes inspiration from nature and harvests a unique ancient grain to create her own high-protein sourdough bread."

The Google Expeditions kit will rotate among all five Stoughton schools.
