Stoughton students were busy broadening their horizons with trips to Washington, D.C. and Germany over the summer.
River Bluff Middle school educators Jennifer Kolberg and Kyle Freund took a group of 25 eighth-graders to Washington, D.C. from June 13 to 16. It was the second year that Kolberg and Freund took a group of students to our nation's capital.
"It was the first flight on a commercial plane for many of our students – and even the first time some of them had left the state!" Kolberg said.
The group flew out of Madison and then took a tour bus throughout the D.C. area. Sites visited include brand new National Museum of African American History and Culture, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Mount Vernon, Air and Space Museum, Museum of American History, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, September 11th Pentagon Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, White House, Arlington National Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Changing of the Guard, Kennedy Gravesites, United States Capitol Tour, Ford's Theater & Petersen House, Newseum, National Archives and a Twilight Tattoo Ceremony.
Another trip is planned for June 2018 for interested students. Stay tuned for details!
Just as River Bluff students returned home, a group of Stoughton High School students headed out for Germany.
Stoughton High School participates in the German American Partnership Program(GAPP), a student exchange program between the United States and Germany. Every other year, SHS students studying the German language visit the country and spend some times attending school there and living with host families. Those host families' students then visit the United States and attend Stoughton High School for a couple weeks during our school year.
Stoughton students left the U.S. on June 13. They first traveled to Munich until Friday June 16, then lived with their host families in Greven until Friday June and finally ended their trip in Berlin until Monday July 3.
The kids blogged about their trip at https://shsgapp2017.wordpress.com/.
Memories of the trip noted on the blog include:
- Learning how to use public transportation in Munich
- Meeting host families for the first time at the Greven train station
- The super cool Berlin Unterwelten air raid shelter tour
- A great but rainy day together in Köln
- Seeing the students experiencing the German language and culture
We're looking forward to hosting our German guests later this school year (2017-18).
