Stoughton schools rolling into Summer Reading

Did you know the key ingredient to preventing summer learning loss is continued reading during the summer months? All five Stoughton schools have programs to promote summer reading.

Fox Prairie

Fox Prairie is conducting a pair of Summer Reading Initiatives.

Book Bonanza: A total of 91 of Fox Prairie students in grades kindergarten through fourth will receive packages every two weeks throughout the summer. Reading Specialists Nicki Girling and Marilee Cronin carefully selected books to meet students' interests and reading level with the goal of encouraging summer reading and to stay connected to the school community.

Summer Reading Night:

Fox Prairie Working for Kids along with Fox Reading Specialists will host a summer reading night with a book swap, bouncy house, concessions and face painting. We will also be greeting our incoming kindergarten students with a new book to start the school year! Summer Reading Night will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. August 16 in front of Fox Prairie (rain location: Fox Prairie gym).

Kegonsa

Kegonsa will offer a summer program called Open a Book. The Open a Book program is an academic literature enrichment experience offered to a small group of children in grades kindergarten through third at Kegonsa.

During previous years, students who participated in such opportunities made significant gains - a majority of students either maintained or improved their reading level from last year! This year Kegonsa has planned additional, engaging reading opportunities for our students. The Open a Book sessions will be on Thursday afternoons.

Sandhill

Sandhill staff will be hosting numerous "Book Bash" opportunities for students to engage in reading over the summer.

Book Swaps: During Book Swaps, students can bring gently used books that are appropriate for kids in grades kindergarten through fifth and swap them for new books.

This year, Sandhill staff are taking Book Swaps on the road! Look for the Sandhill Book Swap on Bikes at the following locations: Stoughton High School baseball field, Bjoin Park and Norse Park. We will be traveling to and stopping at each location on Wednesday, July 19 (20 rain date) and Tuesday, August 15 (16 rain date) from 6-7:30 p.m.

YouTube Read Alouds: Each week beginning June 14 through August 30, a Sandhill staff member will read aloud a picture book biography and post it to the Sandhill YouTube channel. New read clouds will be posted on Wednesdays and archived for viewing anytime. After you watch one of the read alouds, leave a comment or your name for a chance to win a copy of the book that was read!

River Bluff

To encourage students to keep reading great books over the summer months, the River Bluff library will offer a summer checkout program. Current sixth and seventh grade students have the opportunity to check out a bag of books for the summer.

Stoughton High School

The Stoughton High School LMC is now allowing students in grades nine through 11 to check out books over the summer!! Interested students should stop by the LMC on Thursday, June 8, or Friday, June 9, to choose up to 10 books. Students MUST be in good library standing in order to check out summer books.

The LMC will be open during Summer EXCEL. Students can exchange books between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. June 19-July 14 (the LMC is closed June 30 and July 4).

All books are due back September 5, the first day of school.
